Logic & Critical Thinking in the MCU
The class will provide students with a fun introduction to the tools of Critical Thinking and Logic by looking at the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). My main goal is to teach the students to create good arguments and effectively critique bad arguments, regardless of whether the topic is Marvel related or not. We will be examining the following concepts: Statements Truth Argument Deduction vs. Induction Rhetorical Devices Fallacies Propositional Logic Students will be required to complete weekly readings and assigned homework. During each class, I will lecture on the week’s reading, facilitate relevant discussions and activities, and provide opportunities for students to practice their newfound skills. High School English High School English Credit This class will provide students with a foundation in literature and academic writing by focusing on ancient Greek classics. We will be exploring whole texts and excerpts from several renowned Greek authors, including: Hesiod’s Theogony Homer’s Odyssey A tragedy by Euripides (or Sophocles) A comedy by Aristophanes Dialogues by Plato Students will be required to complete weekly readings, weekly short writing assignments, and one 3–5-page essay. Students will also be engage in class discussions and activities. During each class, I will lecture on the week's reading and facilitate a class discussion. I will also provide instruction on academic paragraph and essay writing. Students will receive written feedback on every writing assignment they submit. Zeph Scotti High School English & Logic Classes Zeph Scotti, married to Claire Scotti and dad to Shiloh (10) & Oliver (5). Zeph graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy. After living and working in Japan, Zeph went on to earn two masters' degrees in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Philosophy. In 2007, Zeph and Claire began living and working in Japan and then Australia. He now teaches at Pasadena Community College as Logic and Arugment Professor. Zeph will be teaching a high school English class largely based on ancient and classical Greek literature. Since some will (mistakenly) think that a dull topic, he is also teaching a Logic & Critical Thinking course that focuses on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. |

Conversational Spanish
Jr. & High School ¡Sigue adelante! Keep going! Improve your conversational skills in a peer-friendly environment. For students in 7th - 12th grades who speak some Spanish. Weekly homework: students prepare written outline or notes on given topics for class conversations. Activities, games and oral presentations to promote talking in class. Where else do you hear that?! :) Teacher will moderate to assist with oral production: vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. 3rd grade & Up ¡Hablemos! Let’s talk! This class is for students starting their Spanish speaking journey. We start with the ABCs, letter sounds, useful vocabulary and listening to Spanish stories for “ear training”. Georgina started learning Spanish at age 3 from her Mamita (grandmother). Graduating with B.A. in Radio, TV & Film Production from Cal State L.A., allowed her to intern at CBS and work for N.W. Ayers Advertising Agency when she discovered her passion had changed from career gal to motherhood. She studied toward a teaching credential and worked as a bilingual teacher/sub for Mountain View School District for 5 years. She has done voice over work in English and Spanish and has had the privilege of being a Sunday School teacher for over 30 years. Walking with Jesus since 1984, married and grateful to James since 1989 when she was blessed to become a full-time homemaker. Mom to Alexandra, Timothy and Lauren, and grandma to Bella.

Art through Photography In this course students will learn to use photography to create art. We will learn about light. How to find it and how to use it in our pictures. We will learn how to use our cameras. We will find our own style to tell a story and learn to document through photography. We will have in class discussions, activities with lots of hands on learning with weekly homework assignments of taking pictures and editing using the techniques we learn about. The class will have an online blog that they will learn to use. Its where assignments will be posted and where we will all post our work. Students will research styles of photography as well as photographers for a final project. Students will have time in class to use a DSLR to learn basic functions and learn hands on. Students may use any camera and editing software they have available for assignments. Phone camera, DSLR, etc. We will spend some time in each class learning the camera functions, settings and more technical parts of the camera they are specifically using as well as editing software they are using. Cynthia has been in love with photography since she was a child. Always learning and capturing every moment she could for herself and for others. She is married to her high school sweetheart. Together they have one son. She has homeschooled for 10 years now and continues to homeschool her son and also homeschools her 4 nieces and nephews. As a professional photographer of over 10 years she is excited to teach her students about finding that perfect light and capturing that perfect moment. |

Physics
Physics is a science that studies how the universe works in terms of matter and motion. We’ll study mechanics, kinematics, energy, momentum, light, electricity, relativity and sound, among other topics. Students will learn to recognize physical concepts and laws in the natural world in day to day events. They will increase their critical and creative thinking skills, using them to solve a wide variety of problems. This course covers all the California Physics Standards. *A-G status is pending** $350 semester fee (including supplies) +$50 for charter school students. Prerequisites: There’s a lot of math in physics! Completion of Algebra 1 is a bare minimum. We’ll also be solving problems involving second order equations and basic trigonometry functions, which a dedicated student should be able to learn with extra study outside the classroom if he or she hasn’t learned them yet. Guy loves learning and helping others learn and having fun while doing so. He has often been complemented on his ability to present complex concepts in simpler, easier to understand ways. He is a former Air Force test pilot, NASA astronaut, government executive, teacher and head of school. He has served as a high school teacher (Guy likes to call it learning facilitator) for math, physics, government & economics in public, private and home school settings. Other teaching positions have included instructor fighter pilot, instructor test pilot, college engineering teacher, and high school and adult Bible study teacher. He has also given hundreds of motivational/educational presentations on flying in space to folks of all ages from kindergarteners to senior citizens.
Guy has a Bachelor’s Degree with majors in Astronautics, Mathematics and Engineering Sciences from the Air Force Academy, a Master’s Degree in Aeronautical & Astronautical Engineering from Purdue University and a Master’s Degree in Education from Virginia Tech. He held a teaching certificate in Virginia for grades 6 – 12 in mathematics and physics. Guy and his wife Linda, an art and elementary school teacher, have three grown children and five grandchildren. Linda and one of their daughters, TJ Teems, also teach home school students. Guy enjoys spending time playing with their grandchildren (ages 1 through 17), hiking, biking, fixing up their house and is trying to learn to play the guitar. He backpacked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine in 2014. |

Dance Fundamentals Does music get you swaying, do you wish you had a vocabulary you could call on when you want to move. Come join us and learn the basics of all kinds of dance: Ballet, Jazz, Hip hop, Tap, and there may even be some social dance. This class will be divided into sessions where we focus on a different style of dance. Each Session will include a warm up & Conditioning, some technique or center work and choreography. Bringing Literature to Life Lets read! This is a class for students who love to read or want to develop a love of reading. Using a collection of books from various genres, we will explore authors, settings, character development, literary devices, and plot structure. Each class will include Socratic discussion, a game or craft to enhance our learning, and a time of reading together. Each book will conclude with a fun celebration in class. Anita Fischer (RAD RTS) grew up in England where she trained with The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). She is certified as a teacher with this prestigious organization and continues to train with them annually. She has toured extensively throughout the United States, South America and Europe performing and teaching. In addition to dance, she has also had extensive training in mime from Todd Farley and Marcel Marceau. She has performed and choreographed many theatrical productions both local and professional and runs her own dance studio, where she annually enters students for RAD exams. She has co-directed a Children’s Theatrical Company, and until last year, was the Director of Dance for the International Worship Symposium and choreographer for the Opera Department at Azusa Pacific University. She is married to Paul Fischer and together they have four children

Meet the Masters Art Program
Come discover the life, works, and techniques of 10 master artists in this hands-on, art history course. Students will watch a multi-media presentation where they observe the works and discover the life story of each artist. Then they will keep a notebook about each artist and create a project in the style of that artist using a variety of art media while learning vocabulary and drawing techniques. Parents will be impressed at the next, art museum field trip when their children can say, “Look Mom! Rebekah Mackie, a mother of 5 and former school teacher, is in her 12th year of homeschooling. She has a BA liberal studies (elementary education) from Azusa Pacific University and has taught the Meet the Masters program on and off for the last 17 years. Rebekah has also directed award-winning musicals for 5+ years. Rebekah’s production of Seussical the Musical and Beauty and the Beast Jr. won several Youth Awards including Best Musical in the Junior category!

Spanish 1
During this course, students will cover proper usage of verbs in different tenses, basic sentence structure, and build vocabulary, reading, writing, and listening comprehension skills. Students will also learn about famous people, songs, and topics of life in Hispanic countries. Students will have a project on a Hispanic country as well. Valeria was born and raised in Argentina, so Spanish is her native language. At the age of 22, she moved to the United States. She met and married Moses, her husband of 19 years. Early on their marriage, with only minimal exposure to the English language, she attended Evan’s adult school to improve her English, while simultaneously teaching Spanish at a women’s shelter in Los Angeles. Valeria and Moses have two teenage boys, Ethan and Matteo. Frustrated with the school options in Pasadena, their church family encouraged them to try homeschooling. It has been one of the most wonderful and most challenging journeys, but they are so grateful for all the memories and experiences they’ve enjoyed as a homeschool family. The boys eventually expressed an interest in learning Spanish so Valeria began speaking Spanish with them at home. Valeria has also taught several organized classes to outside students, including geography, history, STEAM, games, and movement. She has also been regularly tutoring high school students in Spanish since 2018, so she has a good feel for how high schoolers approach a second language and where they need som extra help and understanding. She is very excited for the opportunity to teach her native language in a classroom environment with the FUNdamentals families. Nos vemos pronto!

World Geography ~ Exploring Countries & Cultures
Does your child want to be a world traveler? Hop aboard as we travel the world and explore different countries and cultures. The purpose of this geography enrichment course is to provide students with a broad yet rich understanding of the world around them! We will "visit" different countries and learn about the daily lives and environment of those living in distant lands through map skills, living books, food, music and rich discussion! Art: Drawing Technique
Think drawing is a gift that has to come naturally? You might be surprised to see that drawing is a skill that can be developed with practice. In Art- Drawing Techniques, students will learn how to draw utilizing techniques that teach them how to draw what they see, not what they think they see. We will further explore using shapes and lines to understand the basic form of an object by focusing on Composition and Rendering Skills. Students will also be introduced to “The Elements and Principles of Art” and how to apply them, in a variety of subject matter, (Still Life, Portraits, Animation, Animals, Optical Illusions, Linear Perspective, and Landscapes) and Mediums (Sketching, Charcoal, Colored Pencil, Pen and Ink). This class is designed for those who have little experience and those with experience, to thrive. Students will work on technical skills, with their instructor, while developing their own personal style and meaning to their work. Currently, there are 50,000 sketchbooks from 30,000 different regions and countries. After the student returns their sketchbook, it will be available to view at the library “in person” or online “digitally” indefinitely! The student will be notified via text or email whenever their sketchbook is being viewed, at the library or “virtually” in the world! This class is designed to engage ALL students to “think outside of the box“ and develop a theme. Gina has studied many forms and mediums of art since childhood, including sketching, charcoal, pen and ink, oil and chalk pastels, watercolor, oil and acrylic painting. Throughout high school, she received private lessons copying the works of the Masters. Upon graduating, she was accepted to attend Bauder Fashion College immersing herself in Fashion Illustration and Design and Interior Design. Upon graduation, she proceeded to further her education at the University of Texas in Arlington where she majored in Art and Architecture. Gina returned to California and continued to study privately, at LACC, and UCLA. She has exhibited her Art throughout Los Angeles and worked as a “clean up” animator on national commercials at Wong Studios. In 1996 Gina opened a business called “Art Ala Carte” teaching art privately, in the comfort of ones home, predominately catering to homeschooled children. She was in charge of the art program called “Meet the Masters,” where she expanded from the 6-12 slides, initially given with the program, to 60+ slides for each artist creating a more comprehensive and detailed presentation tailored to each level K-2, 3-4, and 5-6 grades at her children’s elementary school for 7 years with great success. In 2013 Gina received the PTA’s “Honorary Service Award” from the State of California. She has been and continues to teach students in the Los Angeles County area that includes North Hollywood, Los Feliz, La Crescenta, Duarte, Monterey Park and all the cities within the surrounding areas for 20+ years. Science FUNdamentals
The title says it all! We are going to make science FUN! Stressed about teaching real science in your already busy schedule? Don't have the time or space for the prep that goes with this amazing subject? Leave the planning to us. FUN Science will take your student on a journey through the rain forest, down into the human body, and out to the interstellar medium. We will explore the basics of Life Science, Chemistry, and Physical Science over a three year period in order to provide a solid middle school science foundation. Except this class will have a twist. It is our belief - as mother and son with 15+ years of experience - that science is best studied with hands-on experiments. We have culled the best projects we have worked on as docents at the Aquarium of the Pacific, students at City of Hope Saturday Science, and partners at the Natural History Museum to stir a passion for STEM and scientific learning. Be prepared to roll up you sleeves and dive in to dissections, chemical solutions, and circuits in this exciting hands-on class. Bernadette & Andrew Gonzalez
Bernadette Gonzalez A graduate of Harvard University, Mrs. Gonzalez has studied science and technology at both Harvard and MIT. She was blessed with an amazing career in the software industry when, as Executive Producer of the JumpStart Learning Series, her brand rose to international acclaim as the number one brand in educational software, grossing over $300M worldwide. This success led to her brand expanding into toys, books, and television. Mrs. Gonzalez has appeared in interviews related to children and learning in over 100 magazines and newspapers, as well as being an expert in technology on the Today Show and Entertainment Tonight. She has served as Keynote Speaker at national conferences on children and technology. After the acquisition of her company by Universal/NBC in 2001, Mrs. Gonzalez took on the oversight of technology and software educational development for all children’s brands under the Universal banner, including Sesame Street, Curious George, and How to Train Your Dragon. Feeling the call to Christian service, in 2003 Mrs. Gonzalez left her career to join the leadership of the Right to Life League of Southern California, a personal passion of hers. Serving as Executive Director, she led the transition of thirteen pregnancy counseling centers throughout California into Medical Clinics, complete with Medical Directors, Sonographers, and Ultrasound machines. Still, her favorite and most rewarding job has been that of fulltime, homeschooling mom to her four beautiful children, aged 6 to 15. Mrs. Gonzalez loves teaching any subject and finding new and interesting ways to inspire learning, but her favorite subject will always be science. You can find her car overflowing with microscopes, binoculars, and a variety of nature books. Her home is full of animals, though some she can’t find at the moment. 😊 Andrew Gonzalez A Davidson Young Scholar, Andrew is the Gonzalez Family resident scientist. When not serving as a docent/educator at the Aquarium of the Pacific, Andrew tends to his own menagerie of critters. He received the 2017 International Herpetological Symposium Junior Herpetologist Award and was invited to present his scientific research at their conference in New Mexico. Andrew was selected to attend the UCI Pre Pre Medical Summer Program and has been featured in the publications from the Natural History Museum and Cornell University for his scientific work with various curators. The oldest of four children, Andrew enjoys leading his siblings in science study, especially if it involves dissecting anything found on his various hiking adventures. |

Art of Making
The visual arts have profound purpose and meaning for us as individuals and corporately as a culture. We will explore imagination and develop skills as we inspire and support one another in the Art of Making. This class will be less focused on traditional drawing and painting but instead on printmaking, metal work, photo transparencies, recycled materials, sculpture, wood work and mixed media. For this class each student will need a pair of latex coated gardening gloves and a smock or apron. This course will cover many of the California Common Core Visual Arts State Standards. In a fun and engaging way, middle school students will learn about the principles that the United States of America has been built upon. The term Charters of Freedom is used to describe the three documents in early American history which are considered instrumental to its founding and philosophy. These documents are the United States Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. This class will explore these documents along with ideas like separation of powers, natural rights, consent of the governed, property rights, promotion of moral character and necessity of the union. We will learn in fun and engaging ways as we interact, discuss, play games and even participate in simulations to help us understand how and why chartering these freedoms was and is meaningful and valuable. Born under grey skies in an Army hospital in Würzburg, Germany, Shannon spent her peripatetic childhood years in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. After moving to Atlanta in high school, she then earned a BA from Auburn University in mass communications with minors in journalism and visual arts. Shannon has cherished over twenty five years of marriage to Stan Baer, a financial advisor in Pasadena. Together they are the parents to Alex (25), Ruby (22), Holly (20), Lily (18), Graham (16), and David (10) Shannon has homeschooled all of her kids and is herself a life-long learner. For over twenty years, Shannon has been envisioning, leading, instructing and serving communities where teachers, parents, children, and teens thrive. She is constantly humbled and surprised by the great meaning and purpose revealed while serving Christian Assembly, Ecclesia Classes, Protégé Education, WISH, Classical Conversations, Pasadena First Church of the Nazarene, Sierra Madre Congregational Church and SunSeeds. She has participated in the documentaries Class Dismissed, The Lily Baer Story, and The Other Side. Shannon is a minister with the International Fellowship of Ministries and has a great passion for seeing the transcendence and immanence of Christ through creative processes. She is honored to come alongside FUNdamentals during this season.

High School Writing and Literature
(HS English credit) This course will explore classic and contemporary literature while developing student writing skills. We will be focusing on the genres of mystery and science fiction from the 19th and 20th centuries, with study of Shakespeare and poetry included as well. Literary analysis of story structure, theme, plot, and characterization will be emphasized, while developing and refining writing skills through persuasive and literary analysis essays, creative writing, and an in-depth research paper. As the course is intended for 9th through 12th grade, assignments and texts may be differentiated to accommodate and challenge students’ varying levels. Proper MLA format and grammar will be taught and reviewed, helping prepare students for writing well in college. Through regular Socratic discussion in addition to poetry memorization and oral presentation, students will also sharpen their critical thinking skills and speaking ability. Literature List:

Kiersti taught High School English (9th-12th) at Judson International School for five years, including two years also teaching 7th grade English. Before that, she worked at Pasadena City College for six years in the Writing Center. She has a B.A. in English with a writing emphasis from Azusa Pacific University and is also a published writer. Art 1
In this beginning drawing class the basics will be introduced. Drawing tools, the elements of sketching and shading and the steps to developing a finished drawing will be taught. We will practice sketching from nature and looking at the essence of a subject in order to begin and develop a drawing. There will also be opportunities to draw from a still life. A practice sketchbook will be used in order to develop drawing skills. This class is designed for grades 3-6. Wednesday 2-3:30 in Altadena $180/Semester Art 2 Learning to see and sketch and draw is so much fun and in the attempt with the right tools, it is amazing what you will discover about what you can draw. We will learn about drawing tools, drawing and sketching techniques. In class we will practice sketching in nature and still life, and learn from Leonardo Da Vinci by looking at his drawings in nature and studies in designing. A practice sketchbook will be used in order to develop drawing skills. From one of our drawings, we will develop a finished painting. Linda was born and raised in New York. After graduating from college, Linda and Guy were married and have been moving around the country and world ever since! Linda has been married to her husband, Guy, for almost 52 years. They have three children, TJ (Jen), Sarah and Jason and now five grandchildren. Linda and her husband recently moved to California from Virginia to be near their daughters and their families, making this their 28th home in 52 years of marriage. It is inspiring and enlightening to travel and move around to different parts of the country and world.
Linda has always been an artist at heart and inspired by the beauty and mystery of God’s incredible world which serve as a springboard for her artwork and poetry. She has taken lessons in high school where she learned to create jewelry, pencil and charcoal drawings, oil paintings, acrylics and ceramics. At the University of Denver’s Women’s College (formerly Temple Buell College), Linda earned a BA degree in Elementary education with a minor in Art and while in Houston, Linda earned an MA in Art Education. Linda has taken additional classes in ceramics and photography and weaving and painting and numerous Bible studies and Women’s Retreats and Conferences, and for some of those she was the speaker. In addition to teaching in the classroom over the years, grades K,2 3, 4, and 6, Linda has also taught art classes to children ages 3 ½-5 and grades 2-5. More recently, Linda has taught homeschoolers, grades 4-6, an Art of the Masters Curriculum using various media, such as clay, tempera, craypas, pastels, torn paper and acrylics. Linda likes to stay active hiking, biking and walking and painting and writing poetry. She also enjoys reading the Word of God, coffee, reading and spending time with Guy and her family and new friends! |

Victoria has been bringing her passion for music and her enthusiasm for teaching to her piano students for over twenty years. She participated in piano competitions and sat for the rigorous Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) exams in grade school before attending MidAmerica Nazarene University where she studied Piano Pedagogy under Karen McClellan. She later studied Piano Performance and Pedagogy under Dr. Cindy Williams.
Victoria has a busy piano studio throughout the San Gabriel Valley. She strives for her students to become proficient in piano while having fun. She instills a love of music into her students and incorporates music history and theory into student’s lessons, in addition to keyboard skills. Her students perform in three annual studio recitals and perform in mini-recitals throughout the community. Additionally, many of her students participate in the annual Piano Guild auditions, while others sit for the ABRSM examinations. Her students look forward to the yearly studio-wide game which encourages practice. Waitlist available. (If you need me to put something else, I can.)
